At 0.45 km², Carlstadt is the smallest part of Düsseldorf in terms of area and borders on the old town, the town centre, Unterbilk and the Rhine.[2]The boundaries of the district are the Rhine in the west, Kasernenstrasse in the east and Haroldstrasse in the south. The northern border with the Altstadt district, on the other hand, is more complicated. The north-western area in particular does not currently correspond to the historical development, although "Rheinort" and "Altersicherungshafen", also known as "Berger Hafen", were located in front of the city wall until the citadel was built. The border to the old town runs from Kasernenstraße via Wallstraße, turns into Mittelstraße and ends at Carlsplatz. From there along Berger Strasse to Hafenstrasse, followed by Akademiestrasse to Rheinstrasse in front of the former Rhine Gate and from there in the direction of the banks of the Rhine (= Strasse Rheinort) at the height of the Rhine gauge. Actually, the historic southern border of the old town to Carlstadt was at Hafenstrasse/Alter Sicherheitshafen.[3]The Carlsplatz as a daily market and restaurant is open every working day.
